Music is the Journey
Rick's career began at 4 years of age when his father James, an accomplished gospel singer and guitarist, bought him a plastic toy guitar for Christmas. Upon noticing his son's earnest efforts to actually "tune" this crude instrument to play a chord, he began to teach Rick to play. By age 6, he could play several tunes. He would begin to perform with his church choir at age 12. Eventually, younger brother Mark would accompany him on bass guitar under the tutelage of their father’s inspiration.
"Music has always been my favorite hobby, be it Gospel, Jazz, or Blues. I consider myself quite fortunate to have performed, recorded, and traveled to Italy with Grammy nominated jazz vocalist, Betty Joplin. My own 'Rick Hicks Band' has been the opening act to: Spyra Gyra, Gladys Knight, Bobby Blue Bland, the Gap Band, James Brown, Kool & the Gang, The Spinners, Frankie Beverly & Maze, the Isley Brothers, and even rapper, L. L. Cool J."
